This January 24 to January 31, 2026, families across the North Okanagan–Shuswap are invited to take part in Unplug and Play Family Literacy Week. This annual celebration encourages families to step away from screens and reconnect through meaningful, in-person experiences. Throughout the week, more than 60 free activities and events will take place in communities across the region, offering fun, engaging opportunities for children and caregivers to learn, play, and connect together.
From juggling acts and scavenger hunts to swimming, skating, cooking, theatre, and martial arts lessons, there is something for everyone to enjoy. These events are designed to bring families together, introduce new activities, and strengthen community connections, all while taking a break from screen time.
In partnership with local organizations and businesses, LASS is proud to offer free, family-friendly events that highlight the importance of literacy, physical activity, and social connection. Whether families are interested in outdoor adventures, creative arts, or trying a new physical activity, there are events available to suit every interest and age group.
Unplug and Play Family Literacy Week is about more than reducing screen time. It is an opportunity to create space for creativity, conversation, and shared experiences that help build strong family relationships and vibrant communities. By unplugging from technology, families can rediscover the joy of spending quality time together.
Families are encouraged to download or pick up a Student Passport and use it to explore the many events happening in their community. Participants can attend as many activities as they like and track their experiences in their passport. Completed passports can be dropped off at any local elementary school or StrongStart program for a chance to win prizes.
We invite families to join us in making screen-free moments part of everyday life. View the calendar of events below and be part of Unplug and Play Family Literacy Week 2026.
