Our Adult Literacy programs are designed to address the needs of adults in our communities. Along with implementing Adult Literacy programs, the Literacy Outreach Coordinator advocates on behalf of the adult population in our region and meets with adults one-on-one to discuss free learning opportunities and any current gaps.
This is a free one-on-one digital tutoring program for adults who want help using technology with more confidence. While the program primarily serves seniors, adults of all ages are welcome. Sessions are paced to the learner and focused on practical, everyday goals.
Each learner is matched with a community volunteer tutor and meets individually to work on the technology that matters most to them. One-on-one tutoring focuses on using laptops, smartphones, and tablets, including help with things like email, internet basics, online accounts, forms, services, video calls, etc. No prior experience is required.
Sessions are typically one hour long. Most learners meet with a tutor for about six weeks, though we try to be flexible and can sometimes adjust based on learner needs and tutor availability. Learning happens at the learner’s pace, with no pressure or judgment.
One-on-one tutoring is offered in person through local library branches and seniors centers in Salmon Arm, Blind Bay, Enderby, Armstrong, and Sicamous.
To register, learners can complete the online registration form using the Learner button on this page, or call the phone number listed below for assistance. Referrals may be made by the learner or by someone on their behalf. All requests go through a central intake process and are then sorted into the appropriate location and program as space becomes available.
Individuals interested in becoming volunteer tutors can complete the online registration form using the Volunteer button or call the number below to learn more.
Cyber Seniors is a free one-on-one tutoring program with sessions geared towards seniors who have never used computers before or who have only a basic knowledge of computers. Each learner is partnered with a community volunteer tutor and together they work on basic skills such as using a mouse, saving files, searching the Internet, and setting up an email account.
In the fall of 2013, LASS launched the first Cyber Seniors Computer Tutoring Centre at the Seniors’ Drop-in Centre in downtown Salmon Arm and we have been pleased to see the program grow and evolve over the years. We currently offer computer tutoring in Blind Bay, Enderby and Sicamous with programs taking place in local seniors centre’s or community library branches.
“Felt very comfortable in learning and I’d recommend this program to anyone learning a computer. Thank you so much for this opportunity.”
