This July, LASS was pleased to host its annual Summer Slide Literacy Camps in Salmon Arm, Sicamous, Enderby, and Armstrong. The goal of these camps is to help elementary students maintain their reading skills during the summer holidays, actively reducing the learning loss that can often occur during a school break.
Each camp program was led by a certified teacher, supported by a dedicated education assistant and enthusiastic volunteers. Together, they created an enriching, fun, and supportive environment for up to 16 students per location.
This year’s camp activities were designed to make reading interactive and joyful. Highlights included creative crafts such as Gruffalo monster making and postcard making, Art Gallery Walks and immersive “camping” reading centres as well as community field trips including a special visit to the Okanagan Regional Library’s “Under the Sea” activity stations.
Beyond classroom and community activities, the program focuses on long-term literacy habits. To help students continue their reading journeys at home, every participant was provided with a selection of books to keep and build their very own home library.
