On Saturday, May 28, 2016, LASS hosted a Family Literacy Workshop for professionals who work with children and families.
Presenters included Lynne Reside, Early Years Community Development Coordinator for Success by 6 and Children First with the United Way of the North Okanagan – Columbia Shuswap region and Debbie Schiller, newly retired Executive Director of Vernon’s Junction Literacy Centre and current volunteer, fundraiser, and facilitator.
”It really was wonderful the way it was presented. Thank you so much!”
Jennifer Findlay, past Literacy Outreach Coordinator at LASS and current Early Learning Coordinator and teacher in School District No. 83 North Okanagan-Shuswap, also presented to the group about the Early Development Instrument used in the province to measure things like Kindergarten readiness.
Participants left with resources and books for their programs, as well as a renewed interest in risky play, social and emotional learning, and using plain language when interacting with families.
”[the best parts were] conversations around how literacy is more than just reading. So many good ideas on making it more relevant in our practice and how to include the parents. All the components fit together and are a part of the greater whole.”
