2016 Family Literacy Workshop

On Saturday, May 28, 2016, LASS hosted a Family Literacy Workshop for professionals who work with children and families.

Presenters included Lynne Reside, Early Years Community Development Coordinator for Success by 6 and Children First with the United Way of the North Okanagan – Columbia Shuswap region and Debbie Schiller, newly retired Executive Director of Vernon’s Junction Literacy Centre and current volunteer, fundraiser, and facilitator.

2016_FamilyLiteracyWorkshop_JenFindlay_EDIJennifer Findlay, past Literacy Outreach Coordinator at LASS and current Early Learning Coordinator and teacher in School District No. 83 North Okanagan-Shuswap, also presented to the group about the Early Development Instrument used in the province to measure things like Kindergarten readiness.

2016_FamilyLiteracyWorkshop_ParticipantsParticipants left with resources and books for their programs, as well as a renewed interest in risky play, social and emotional learning, and using plain language when interacting with families.
