Spelling Bee Raises Over $12,000

Team Bee-Witched claimed the top honour at the LASS spelling bee, held Wednesday, May 8 at the Prestige Inn.

Laughter broke out as teams at the 6th annual LASS spelling bee fundraiser debated whether communique is spelled with or without an accent and grappled with words such as irascible and encephalopathy.

Despite the challenging word list, Team Bee-Witched prevailed and won for a fifth time, remaining Salmon Arm’s undisputed spelling champions.

As always, the early morning fundraiser included a healthy dose of humour, fun costumes, team work and friendly competition, all to support community literacy programs and events in the region.

With a few new teams joining the competition this year, over $12,000 was raised to fund programs such as  ONE To ONE reading throughout district elementary schools, Cyber Seniors Computer Tutoring, Unplug and Play events in January and Books for Babies.

LASS would like to thank the many individuals, local businesses, volunteers, school district and media whose contributions all make the spelling bee a success. We hope to see everyone again next year!
