Celebrate Literacy!

Every year on September 8International Literacy Day is celebrated globally—a day to reflect on the power of reading and writing, and the role literacy plays in creating stronger, more inclusive communities. The entire month of September is also recognized as Literacy Month, which encourages people to engage in and advocate for literacy around their communities.

International Literacy Day was established by UNESCO in 1966 to highlight the importance of literacy as a human right and a cornerstone for sustainable development. The day was created to remind us literacy is not just about reading books—it’s about opening doors to knowledge, employment, and full participation in society.

There are many meaningful ways to get involved and help build a more literate world:

  • Donate Books: LASS accepts donations of gently used books to be redistributed through Little Free Libraries throughout the region
  • Volunteer Your Time: From tutoring children in the ONE TO ONE literacy program or helping seniors improve their technology skills, your time is one of the most valuable gifts you can give.
  • Give Financially: Your donations help fund literacy programs, provide learning materials, and train educators to reach those who need it most.
  • Spread the Word: Use your voice on social media to share facts, stories, and why literacy matters to you. Advocacy starts with awareness.
