Together we can help improve literacy throughout
the North Okanagan-Shuswap Area.
LASS regularly participates in community events to promote and increase awareness of literacy resources and strategies. Annual events that we support include, Early Years Fairs throughout the North Okanagan-Shuswap, the Canada Day Children’s Festival in Salmon Arm, Story Time in the Park hosted by Okanagan Regional Library and Kindergarten Vaccine Fairs held by Interior Health.
Our Spelling Bee fundraiser provides an opportunity for community members to work together as a team, support literacy in the North Okanagan-Shuswap and have fun! The event is all about teamwork and community building with a dash of friendly competition, but don’t be intimidated no one spells alone or aloud!
The first Spelling Bee took place in 2014 and raised $13,000 to support literacy programs such as Books for Babies, One to One Children’s Literacy, Unplug and Play Literacy Week, Cyber Seniors Computer Tutoring and Spread the Word Book Bin Exchange. In subsequent years the Spelling Bee became an important source of funds to sustain and expand programs.
Teams of eight can choose either the Queen Bee sponsorship level at $1200 a table, or the Bumblebee level at $1000. Individual seats can also be sponsored and filled by LASS volunteers or high school students.
Breakfast is included at this early morning event and costumes are encouraged!
If you would like more information about participating in the Spelling Bee please contact Terra Stephenson at:

Unplug & Play is a week-long series of free family events that promote unplugging from technology and spending time together as a family and takes place each year during Family Literacy Week (at the end of January). Local organizations and businesses throughout the North Okanagan-Shuswap host free events for families. Some examples of events include: Random Acts of Reading, Preschool Storytime, Retro Games Night, Family Skate, Family Swim, Books with the ‘Backs, Sliding Party, and many more.
Check back in early January for the schedule of events.
Thanks to the City of Salmon Arm for providing funding towards this program.
We acknowledge the financial support of the province of British Columbia
LASS, the Shuswap Family Resource Centre, Eagle Valley Community Resource Centre, Enderby and District Resource Centre and Armstrong Foodbank have partnered on a family literacy initiative. The “Books Under the Tree” program will see quality children’s books included in Christmas Gift Campaigns at the Resource Centres for children in our area.
The books were purchased with funding provided by the Canada Post Community Foundation. We want to thank the Canada Post Community Foundation for giving us the opportunity to brighten Christmas for children in need by giving them books to read.
